Phase 1 - Project Plan: Students will meet with organization representative(s) to understand the project scope and prepare a detailed plan for completion of the project.

Phase 2 - Project Execution: Students will work on deliverables outlined in the project plan. Teams will periodically communicate with organization representative(s) as needed to complete project tasks.

Phase 3 - Report and Presentation: Students will submit a written project plan. Teams will also formally present their plan in class, which you are invited to attend (virtually or in person).

Project Examples

A group of student-consultants will devote a cumulative total of 400 hours to developing a Project Management Plan for a project of your choosing.

Using Project Management Theory, students will determine the breakdown of work of a future project for your organization, including project requirements, risks, costs, timelines, and responsibilities to drive the implementation process.

You'll be connected to your student group as early as possible in the fall semester. They'll spend the time before the class kicks off (November-December) putting together some of the administrative aspects of the project, including a project charter and risk management plan. This frees up the students to actively manage the proposed project when their course kicks off in January.

Project examples could include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of a new website
  • Implementation of a new software or system
  • Business process change
  • A marketing initiative
  • New product/service launch
  • Evaluation of new technology
  • An event or workshop

To better understand the students capabilities, in the example of a project to develop a new website, students will:

  • Put together a project charter, schedule and risk assessment
  • Manage stakeholders and ensure the project is being completed in accordance with the project plan

Students will not:

  • Develop the website or create content, except in occasional circumstances where the project aligns with an area the student has interest and experience in.
