Overview

A group of social work students will develop a report with an overview and specific recommendations for your human services employees regarding using safe language and create a friendly and inclusive environment. Safe language involves discarding outdated and stereotypical or prejudicial language when working with clients with mental health issues or minority groups. Inclusive environment involves celebration of differences, increasing understanding of how privilege impacts our individual, institutional and structural systems, and the advocacy and support for those who do not hold power and privilege. The goal is to help employees become more aware of labels and outdated language and privileges, enhance communication skills, and help move toward a safe language and inclusive climate. An example of the person-first safe language approach is saying “a person with schizophrenia” instead of “a schizophrenic.”
