Virtual Internship (paid; full or part-time)

An opportunity to bring in a Master's NAME student this summer to meet short term needs of your organization and contribute to development of a future engineer for Canada's marine industry. The full- or part-time, engineering intern will complete a specific project conducted virtually (i.e. off-site) for anywhere from 6-16 weeks. Internships can commence anytime from May through July; ending by Labour Day. Minimum 180 hours.

Students can work on one or more projects during the internship. This virtual internship could also be an opportunity for your junior technical staff to develop their supervisory skills.

Recruit from our Master of Engineering Leadership program (all students have 4 to 10+ years industry experience ranging from shipyards, mariners, project managers) or the Master of Engineering program (all have undergraduate engineering degrees plus 2 to 8+ years industry experience).

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Deliverables are determined and outlined by the client - you. This could include design drawings packages, background research findings, data analysis summary, financial summary, beta units of systems, etc. Students will need to complete a technical report to meet the NAME 592 Internship course requirement, submitted to the Director, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering no later than September 4.

Project Examples

Here are some examples of how these Master's students can apply their knowledge:

  • Prepare design schematics and detail drawings for vessel requirements
  • Design document preparation for new products and components including drawings and engineering specifications
  • Propulsion and hydrodynamic analyses; stability tests and calculations; structural drafting and design
  • Data Analysis: Validate data sources, transformations, and analysis against reference data to ensure quality, accuracy, and completeness of derived reports.
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Virtual work engagement - provision of all necessary materials in order to set intern up for project execution success.Ensure student has appropriate resources to conduct the work from their home office.

First week of internship, provide an orientation to the organization, 'office', and team, including vision and mission, relevant personnel, safety practices, and the project(s) and related duties or tasks over the period of the virtual internship. Outline deliverables and advise the student regarding all issues of confidentiality in the workplace and ensure that any non-disclosure agreements are signed prior to the commencement of work.

Supervisor will participate in a brief mid-point check in with UBC staff to discuss student's progress and complete an end of internship online performance evaluation.

Provide a supervisor (and alternate designate) for the duration of the internship project who will oversee the student’s work, discuss expectations, is available for periodic emails/phone calls/video chat over duration of the internship and, on a regular basis, provide feedback to the student on how they are performing, including areas of strength and areas for development.
