Details

Community partners are invited to present a real-world challenge, question, or issue to be explored or analyzed by third year Mechanical Engineering students.


Students will first work to define the problem in a way that leads to solutions, then apply their developing knowledge on the issues presented and provide a conceptual solution. Students will use a process called human-centred design. By completing this project, students will experience how they can create a positive change in society through the lens of engineering & technology. Through this process, students will practice empathizing and communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders.


Some examples of past questions include:

  • How can we create a student-led re-use facility on campus for project supplies and other materials that the university disposes of?
  • How might York University reduce the environmental footprint associated with transportation?
  • How can we reduce emissions at York University?

While these are just some example questions, please note that questions do not need to be specific to the York University community.

Deliverables

Deliverables are negotiable, and will seek to align the needs of the students and the organization.


Some final project outcomes might include:

1.     A 10-15 minute presentation on key findings and recommendations

2.     A detailed report including their research, analysis, insights and recommendations

Project Examples

Students in groups of 4-6 will work with your organization to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.

Project examples that students can complete may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Providing conceptual & realistic designs that would address business & community needs
  2. Producing drawings, sketches, thorough analysis of proposed design solutions & implementation plans within the requirements of the organization
  3. Conducting in-depth research on projects affecting a specific problem within the organization, providing a complete report of findings


Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Provide relevant information/data as needed for the project.

Provide a dedicated contact person who is available to address students’ questions as well as periodic messages over the duration of the project.

Be available for a quick phone/virtual call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide an opportunity for students to present their work and receive feedback.
