Students can partner with you to

At the end of the term, you will be presented with a final report and will be invited to attend a short, focused presentation, where you will have the opportunity to share constructive feedback with the students.

Project Examples

This course assists students in developing strong analytical, quantitative, and communication skills through independent research. It familiarizes students with some of the major issues and research approaches in economics through discussions and presentations of various topics. Most issues can be viewed through an economic lens and the instructor will work closely with you to address your question and ensure high quality educational experience for students. The ideal project will:

- utilize the students' advanced knowledge of the discipline as well as their analytical and technical skills;

- have a well-defined objective;

- have a data analysis component and/or require review of the relevant academic literature.

ECON 4089 has offered students the opportunity to work on projects covering diverse topics. Here are examples of projects with their goals:

Landscape of Poverty in Toronto: Using publicly available data, identify "pockets of poverty" in Toronto neighbourhoods and identify differences in the standard of living between the average person living in a pocket of poverty and the average person living in the neighbourhood and the City of Toronto.

What Can Behavioural Economics Teach Urban Development Policy Makers? Review the relevant literature to identify insights from cognitive psychology and behavioural economics that shed light on how people living in poverty make decisions to inform policy makers on the design and implementation of more effective and efficient urban development policies.

Gender Differences in Demand for Microinsurance in Ethiopia: Use data collected by the partner to identify gender differences and the underlying factors determining these differences to provide recommendations for the design of effective microinsurance products for women.

Is There a Role for Microinsurance in Canada? Use data provided by the partner to identify the factors that affect the microinsurance purchase decision and those that impede the market development in Canada.

Industry Sector Analysis: Use data provided by the partner to classify industries using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and compute location quotients to identify existing and emerging industry clusters with comparative advantage.

The Impact of Covid-19 on the Mental Health of Canadians: Use data collected by Statistics Canada to assess the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of different demographics of the Canadian population.
