Building Partnerships in Houston
Refugee Services of Texas (RST) is the largest refugee resettlement agency in the state and serves a variety of displaced populations including refugees, asylees, asylum seekers, unaccompanied children and survivors of human trafficking. Since its founding in 1978, RST has expanded to serve these communities in Houston, Harlingen, Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth and Amarillo. Comprehensive services provided to clients include housing, basic needs, case management, health services, mental health care, employment services, legal access and more. To varying degrees, each of our resettlement sites is in need of developing and enhancing community partnerships to help us provide needed services to clients. Our Houston site, in particular, would greatly benefit from a thorough assessment of agencies clients and RST case managers can access to meet various needs. The goal of this project is to compile a list of community resources in various categories including: - Housing - Utilities - Transportation - Clothing - Food - Mentoring - English language lessons - Childcare - LGBTQ resources - Healthcare - Mental health - GED services - Post-secondary education (help applying, student aid, scholarships) - Legal assistance - Employment Other categories may arise from students’ research into local resources as well and are welcome to be included. The finished list will include information on each agency including: - Name - Location - Contact info - Eligibility - Services offered Compiling this list may involve contacting organizations to verify or clarify information.
Identifying Funding Opportunities in Houston
Refugee Services of Texas (RST) is the largest refugee resettlement agency in the state and serves a variety of displaced populations including refugees, asylees, asylum seekers, unaccompanied children and survivors of human trafficking. Since its founding in 1978, RST has expanded to serve these communities in Houston, Harlingen, Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth and Amarillo. Comprehensive services provided to clients include housing, basic needs, case management, health services, mental health care, employment services, legal access and more. Until now, RST has lacked capacity to further our local fundraising efforts in Houston specifically. We recently onboarded a new Development Associate in the area who will build relationships with potential funders, and it will be extremely helpful to have an assessment of local institutions she can engage. The goal of this project is to generate a list of potential funders who are aligned with our mission in the following categories: - Corporations - Foundations - Faith communities (churches, mosques, temples, religious organizations) - Organizations such as Rotary The resulting document will contain information including: - Name - Contact information - Alignment ( for example, the organization is involved in anti-trafficking efforts, is active on immigration issues, is a partner of a similar organization to RST)
