Project scope

What is the main goal for this project?

Our research lab publishes dozens of papers every year to promote projects in our field of research. Among these papers are systematic reviews of relevant literature, which analyze the progression of research work within the field.

We would like to collaborate with students to support our literature review process by identifying relevant papers and documenting their basic information.

Tasks include:

  • Familiarizing themselves with the inclusion / exclusion criteria to determine which studies are relevant.
  • Searching for relevant studies in databases using keywords and documenting the process.
  • Screening the titles and abstracts of papers to determine their relevance to our project.
  • Documenting relevant papers that can be included in our literature review, including information such as authors and date of publication.
  • Reading the full texts of relevant papers and summarizing their results.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should demonstrate:

  • Understanding of the inclusion / exclusion criteria
  • Identification of potentially relevant studies from keyword searches
  • Application of the inclusion / exclusion criteria to identify relevant studies
  • Documentation of the process and relevant papers identified

Bonus steps would include:

  • Extracting relevant results from papers

Final deliverables should include

  • A final report.

How will you support learners in completing the project?

Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:

  • Our research projects
  • Current understanding of our field of research
  • Input on choices, problems or anything else the students might encounter.

What skills or technologies will help learners to complete the project?

In order to complete this project, students can self-teach, but it is beneficial to be familiar with:

  • Academic papers and their structure
  • Academic research databases
  • Search strategies such as wildcards and Boolean operators

Again, students can complete this project without any of the prior knowledge listed here. Students will be expected to research and learn more about the above as the project goes along.

Resources

We can provide students with:

  • A walkthrough / tutorial of the inclusion / exclusion criteria and relevant keywords for determining which papers are relevant
  • A list of databases to search through and examples of studies to include / exclude
