Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

The objective of this project is to create contents for our comic book which describes Type 2 diabetes, how insulin works on the body and how it might result in hypertension in older populations. Our aim is to communicate insulin's affect on the body from a patient centered perspective focusing on older adults while using simple language and including medical jargon only when necessary

We would like to collaborate with students interested in healthcare to conduct literature reviews and interviews with health providers to help us build our comic booklet. The finalized version of this comic book will be shared via our newsletter, our social media page and our health mobile information team that we will be launching during the summer in 2023.

Supporting the development of this infographic will involve:

  • Conduct background research on Type 2 diabetes, Insulin and Insulin intersection with hypertension
  • Reaching out to physician to interview them
  • Write content for comic book
What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

By the end of the project, students should submit a final report that demonstrates (along with background research) :

  • Understanding of Insulin impacts on the body and how it might facilitate hypertension in older adults.
  • Understanding of social determinants of health that older populations face that contribute to hypertension
  • Government program the cover the cost of prescription drugs
  • Strong communication skills that relay content on insulin via integration of a fictional character to help similar medical jargon
  • Recommended next steps for our organization

About the company

The Racialized Students is a registered non-profit organization. We launched in 2020 during the onset of the pandemic. We were founded to be a resource for Black and racialized students to partake in meaningful research training and networking opportunities that help them advance throughout their academic journey and career journey.

We achieve this through the provision of mentorship, research, and employment training opportunities.

Our mission is to increase the representation of Black people across interdisciplinary Health sectors and increase the rate of employment among Black youth through career advancement training.

We envision a safer and inclusive Toronto where all Torontonians particularly Black and racialized communities can access services and employment free from racism and discrimination.
