The main goal of this project is to undertake a literature review and produce a report on the findings. The student will be searching, reviewing, and synthesizing literature on gender-based violence against and among trans and non-binary people (approximately aged 14 to 35) as part of a larger project researching educational solutions to prevent gender-based violence. The larger project is exploring how trans and non-binary people are often excluded from research on gender-based violence due to the underlying cis-heteronormativity in how gender-based violence is imagined. As such, the ways that trans and non-binary people encounter rape myths are not accounted for in the literature, and this constitutes a major gap since rape myths are the central force behind rape culture. We need to understand how trans and non-binary people encounter rape-supportive attitudes to better know how to prevent and respond to survivors who are trans and non-binary.

The literature review should focus on the Western (predominantly North American) context:

• What are the current trends experienced in trans and non-binary communities (approximately aged 14-35) related to gender-based violence?
• What are the gaps in research?
• How are rape myths related to non-binary and trans people accounted for or not accounted for in the literature? Who is the focus of the literature that exists (i.e., binary trans people, non-binary people, femme non-binary people)? What distinctions are made in the literature for differences within the categories trans and non-binary?
• In what ways do trans and non-binary people resist gender-based violence?
• What kind of programming exists that specifically tailors to the needs of trans and non-binary people in preventing and responding to gender-based violence?

The final report should summarize the articles that have been reviewed, make connections between them to identify and explain themes, as well as note gaps for further research.
