Project scope
What is the main goal for this project?

The main goal of this project is to systematically collect, verify, and document data on the types of businesses within a specific geographic area in Toronto. By conducting on-the-ground assessments, the project aims to provide accurate and up-to-date information to the Toronto Business Improvement Area (BIA), enabling informed decision-making for local economic development and community planning initiatives.

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Preparation and Planning:

  • Familiarize themselves with the specific geographic area assigned.
  • Review the list of businesses or categories provided by the Toronto BIA for verification.
  • Plan the most efficient walking routes to cover the entire area.

Data Collection:

  • Walk through the assigned area and systematically visit each business location.
  • Verify the type of business based on the predetermined categories provided by the Toronto BIA.
  • Take notes on the specific services or products offered by each business.

Documentation:

  • Record the name and address of each business visited.
  • Capture photographs of the storefront or relevant signage for verification purposes.
  • Note any additional information relevant to the business, such as opening hours or unique features.

Categorization:

  • Categorize each business according to the predefined categories outlined by the Toronto BIA.
  • Note any businesses that may not fit into the predefined categories and require special attention.

Geospatial Data:

  • Use mapping tools or applications to geo-tag each business location accurately.
  • Provide the coordinates (latitude and longitude) for each verified business.

Data Quality Check:

  • Regularly review and cross-verify collected data to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Resolve any discrepancies or missing information through follow-up visits or additional research.

Reporting:

  • Compile the verified data into a structured report or database format.
  • Include a summary of the types of businesses present in the area and any notable findings.
  • Submit the collected data to the Toronto BIA within the specified timeframe.

Feedback and Communication:

  • Maintain open communication with the Toronto BIA to address any questions or concerns.
  • Provide feedback on challenges faced during the data collection process and suggest improvements for future projects.

Ethical Considerations:

  • Respect the privacy and policies of businesses and individuals while collecting data.
  • Seek permission if required for taking photographs or entering premises.
