PROJECT DESCRIPTION/DESCRIPTION DU PROJET:

Engage Nova Scotia is an independent non-profit whose focus is a vibrant, inclusive, and resilient province. Our work sits at the intersection of government, non-profit, business, and academic sectors. We have been driving the NS Quality of Life Initiative since 2017.

Our approach:

  • We actively seek to include diverse voices – from all cultural communities, from all parts of the province, and from as many perspectives as possible
  • We operate in a collaborative, neutral, and open space with partners from the private, public, and non-profit sectors, academia, and communities that no one organization or sector owns
  • We create just enough structure to support our activities while staying lean, nimble, and transparent
  • How we do things is as important as what we do
  • We move forward in a spirit of responding to opportunities, supporting one another to take risks, and learning as we go

KEY PROJECT ACTIVITIES/TÂCHES ASSOCIÉES AU PROJET:

Engage is coordinating a 3-year initiative to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in NS. We are seeking to learn more about effective SDG-related community outreach, design, data analysis and visualization, and communications for a variety of audiences and demographic groups, including historically marginalized and underserved communities.

The following are the questions that we’d like students to explore:

Outreach:

  1. Who is working with and towards the SDGs in NS and Canada? What are they doing?
  2. What kind of outreach is happening by those working towards the SDGs? Who are they reaching out to?
  3. What has effective community outreach around the SDGs looked like in NS and beyond?
  4. Does community outreach around the SDGs differ for different target audiences? If so, what should Engage consider when engaging with various communities?

Communications:

  1. What are best practices as they relate to the SDGs?
  2. How do communications differ across different target audiences? What should be considered when communicating with various audiences?
  3. How can our communications be as accessible and inclusive as possible?
  4. Is there a common vocabulary for describing the SDGs in NS? If so, what words or phrases show up most often?

Data Analysis and Visualization:

  1. Who is analyzing or visualizing SDG-specific data in NS and beyond? What are they doing?
  2. What are best practices as they relate to the SDGs?
  3. Do data visualization best practices differ for different audiences? If so, what should Engage consider when visualizing data?

Design:

  1. What are design and media best practices as they relate to the SDGs?
  2. Do design and media best practices differ for different audiences? If so, how should Engage consider design and media for various communities?
  3. How can our designs and media be as accessible and inclusive as possible?

Using the analysis, the design Intrapreneur would then design graphics and visualizations for various aspects of the SDG program.

To this end, Engage’s project will allow students to answer these questions through research (landscape and social media reviews). In doing so, the Intrapreneurs will strengthen Engage’s awareness of effective SDG-related outreach, data analysis and visualization, design, and communications.
