NOTICE: We are no longer accepting applications for the spring semester. You are welcome to apply if you wish to work in the summer/fall.
Our organization is able to offer a virtual internship opportunity for up to 4 students to assist the CEO (a prior CFO/Controller) in financial management including: bookkeeping, budgeting, and other tasks related to managing income, expenses, payroll, etc. in entrepreneurial/small business/personal bookkeeping settings. The student will use Quickbooks Online, and Google Suite (docs/sheets/etc.)
While current clients are based in the United States, this internship will prepare students to be able to apply for jobs working for US or Canadian companies performing bookkeeping and/or assistant Controller roles.
The primary focus for the student will be: to reconcile books to current, then use books to prepare updated budgets and financial statements, and review current methods of tracking data and procedures for managing remote bookkeeping.
The company has a desire to assist in providing work-from home opportunities and further workforce development in bookkeeping and accounting, as a virtual/remote service.
At the end of this internship, the student will have learned:
- Strategy - provide feedback on the remote bookkeeping experience, to assist in further development of a go-to-market strategy for growing the businesses' virtual accounting service offerings.
- Operations - How to manage monthly bookkeeping including multi-person input/review/closing. Be able to recommend process improvements or redesign processes in how bookkeeping and communication is managed, provide recommendations on how. to redesign payment and incentive structures for remote bookkeeping staff to improve employee/contractor performance and engagement.
- Finance - Design new/improved accounting processes; identify opportunities to streamline costs for staffing and/or expenses.
The CEO/mentor also has experience identifying and prosecuting fraud, and may also answer questions regarding these issues, though auditing will not be part of this internship experience.
Other duties the student may complete could include:
- Assisting in grant or loan application preparation, reporting, or other reporting or research related to business operations/finance.
- Business development of marketing materials and/or outreach related to obtaining additional bookkeeping clients.
If this model of training and remote working is viable and the company is able to test a method of building and training a remote, scalable workforce and identify new clients, this internship may lead to a job offer with the organization, and at minimum, in a reference for future work, based on intern performance.
We will plan to communicate with our virtual intern using these communication tools:
