Overview
Learner goals and capabilities

Virtual Internship Opportunity

Bring on one more student from Oklahoma State in the Design, Housing, and Merchandising program to be your virtual interns! Students will work on one or more projects of your choosing over the internship period, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.

Students are available for 275 hours of placement from June 8th to August 12th.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, student placements will only occur virtually.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Deliverables will vary depending on the scope of the project. The student should complete 275-320 hours with your organization by July 30, 2021.

Project Examples

Project examples that students can complete may include, but are not limited to these 6 areas:

1) Design Development :

  • Design and sketch a product group for your internship firm ( Student's sketches will reflect the target market and the fabric chosen)
  • Describe and suggest style changes to an existing pattern to create a style for the current line.
  • Prepare a detailed technical drawing/flat and indicate the fabric choice, component materials, colors, widths, style numbers, vendors, and prices
  • Develop proficiency with software such as Photoshop and/or Illustrator that is used by the company to create a style board.

2) Patternmaking :

  • Assist patternmakers in the development of original patterns and assist designers in the draping of original designs and developing production patterns from the drape
  • Generate a knock-off of a competitor or in-house garment.

3) Production :

  • Create a flow chart depicting the major steps in manufacturing a garment produced by your internship firm
  • Complete a sequence of operations chart for an apparel item currently being produced by your firm. Students will then offer analysis, determine if there are any alternative methods of assembly that would reduce the labor component while maintaining the quality levels ( I.e style changes, reordering, deleting, combining or substituting operations, stitch types, or seam classes)

4) Technical Design :

  • Complete technical drawings for the garments your internship firm’s line, either by hand or on the computer
  • Participate in a quality control audit at the sample level or at the production level and describe the process

5) Materials Procurement :

  • Describe how fiber and fabrication choices are made and how garment components (materials and notions) are selected.
  • Recommend alternative fabrications for seasonal styling changes.

6) Product Cost :

  • Students will evaluate essential elements in the costing process and factor in material costs, direct labor, manufacturing overhead, factory cost, general and administrative costs, and profit.

7) Market Research :

  • Review market needs through online research and customer sentiment analysis from online reviews, in-depth interviews or fit sessions.

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Provide a dedicated contact who will act as the student's primary supervisor over the duration of the virtual placement. A secondary contact should be provided as a backup. Students will interact virtually with their primary contact on a daily basis, or as needed.

Placements are for-credit experience for students and may be unpaid, but honorariums or wages are welcomed if your organization is able to provide a stipend for the student

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.
