Learner goals and capabilities

Looking to elevate your organization, and bring it to the next level? Bring on students from Clarkson University to be your student-consultants, in a project-based experience. Students will work on one main project over the course of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.

This course a culminating technical experience for students who have completed a foundation engineering science education (i.e. mechanical, chemical, and electrical courses that are required by traditional engineering majors). Primarily designed for Engineering and Management (E&M) program, this capstone course will involve a real world technical problem that requires application of the knowledge gained in previous engineering science and management courses, along with process design principles.

Project Examples

Requirements

Students in groups of 3-5 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.

Below are some projects that have been completed by students in previous cohorts:

  • Process engineering and design of a manufacturing and distribution center; including new facility design, including layout and overhead material handling selection
  • Consulted on smart agriculture - the combination of technology and farming practices to more efficiently and effectively grow produce for the everyday consumer
  • Analysis and recommendation of the designs (electrical, plumbing, safety, ingress/egress, etc.) needed to operate a specific business
  • Analysis of of the equipment/procedures that are being utilized within a greenhouse, with the purpose of improving operations throughout their production cycle. From planting to packaging, and all the steps in between. Project included components such as reducing electrical usage, increased productions, reduced time from seed to harvest, improved processing of final products, etc.
  • Consulted a New York State non-profit organization that operates a Tier 1 electronics recycling facility and were interested in becoming a Tier 2 organization. Deliverables included: time studies to determine the process time required to dismantle appliance/electronic devices, fixed and variable costs for obtaining certification, business plan for the conversion of the facility and process from Tier 1 to Tier 2.
