Do you want to ensure that your organization is incorporating equitable practices that are inclusive and meet current diversity standards?

The Indigenous Student Intern will be advance the design and implementation of educational activities, research projects, student-generated content, and EDI related events and initiatives related to Indigenous issues, pedagogies, and knowledges. The Indigenous Student Intern will be

in charge of various logistic and design aspects for the consortium with a series of communications streams (e.g. spotlights, faculty showcase, student perspectives, spring and summer institutes, with a particular focus on initiatives dedicated to indigenizing the academy,

decolonizing our universities, land-based indigenous knowledges and pedagogies, and social justice efforts to support African Nova Scotians and other marginalized or historically under-represented student and faculty populations.

Students will submit a handbook report with a detailed analysis and recommendations for strategic plan. There is also an additional option to have the student interns make a presentation.

The student should complete 280 hours with your organization by September 1, 2020.

Project Examples

Student-consultants will perform an inclusion and diversity assessment at your workplace to assess where your organization currently stands and then provide recommendations for incorporating equitable practices that are relevant for your company. Studies show that workplaces that value diversity gain a competitive advantage, have more adaptable and creative workforces, and perform better financially than similar firms. Many young job-seekers want to work at firms that value diversity, and rank a diverse workplace as extremely important in deciding what firms they want to work for.

Some areas of focus can include but are not limited to:

  • Design a micro-credentialing course about cultural competence
  • Event or conference planning and connecting with presenter from various backgrounds for multiple voices and perspectives
  • Developing a roll out plan for incorporating diverse practices into your workforce and explaining its positive benefits
  • Developing a plan to re-imagine your mission, vision, and purpose and roll it out to employees.
  • Creating a strategy for attracting more diverse talent
  • A comparison of how your organization's equitable practices stack up with similar companies
  • Suggestions for incorporating diversity training
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Placement is paid, with student expected to earn $14/hour.
