problem solving ergonomic analysis office ergonomics injury management researchThe field placement is the culminating experiential learning opportunity for students in Advanced Ergonomic Studies. The project can range from 40 hours to up to 280 hours (8 weeks) depending on the project chosen. The ergonomic students have completed two semesters of intensive theoretical and practical study in the ergonomics discipline. They are available May 3rd 2021 to June 25th 2021. The virtual field placement project enables students to apply skills and concepts to solve real problems.
Student placements can occur virtually and onsite with proper Covid protocol.
The student's placements are for credit and therefore unpaid.
Deliverable will vary depending on the scope of the project. The student should complete at least 40 hours and up to 280 hours with your organization , multiple projects with individuals or groups are encouraged. Projects need to be completed by June 25th 2021
Project deliverables normally include but are not limited to:
- Up to an hour presentation summarizing findings
- 5-10 page report on key findings
- Literature Reviews
- Database Analysis

Project Examples
Musculoskeletal injuries are common in the workplace. Ergonomics can help your company with the design and set up of your workplace. Including Ergonomic awareness, office ergonomics, workplace assessment, technology interventions, injury data analysis, and recommendations. Students work remotely with an organization and will work under the guidance of a company mentor and a faculty member. The work activities in the virtual field placement will align with the workplace expectations of a beginning practitioner of ergonomics. Emphasis will be placed on professionalism and the development of essential employability skills. Projects can come from a wide range of settings, including industrial and manufacturing environments, municipal government, health care institutions, software companies, utilities, and consultancies.
Projects or service examples that students can complete may include, but are not limited to:
- Remote ergonomic assessments, through video’s and online communication, have an ergonomist assess a job in your workplace
- Office ergonomic assessment (including Home offices) through online interviews, checklists, and virtual assessments –recommendations on how to set up office will be provided
- Develop Ergonomic awareness training (online/video) for your company
- Develop a Stretching/Exercise program specific to the demands of your industry
- Comparison of ergonomic interventions: Anti Fatigue matting vs insoles, Exoskeleton success
- The Co-Vid 19 Safe practices – work with your company’s health and safety team, benchmark what other companies are doing, and propose ergonomic workstation designs
- Database of Ergonomic Solutions
- Literature review/data analysis /human-computer interface for specific needs for your company
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Be available to attend the student's final presentations virtually.
Providing a dedicated contact who will act as the student's primary supervisor over the duration of the virtual placement. A secondary contact should be provided as a backup. Students will interact virtually with their primary contact on a daily basis, or as needed.
Connecting with the Program Coordinator (Allison Stephens) to initiate the placement and confirm the scope is an appropriate fit for the course.
Placements hours will be used for their associate ergonomist accreditation.
