Learner goals and capabilities

We live in a world that is faced with complex societal challenges including, but not limited to poverty, social inequality, and limited access to vital economic and social resources. The I DO Project connects students with global NGOs who made it their mission to combat these societal challenges on a local scale, but who face shortcomings in their knowledge and insights to fruitfully materialize their ambitions.

The I DO project is all about taking action now. We believe that students, especially at RSM, already have the skills and experiences that are necessary to evoke positive change now. Why wait? Alongside an academic programme that equips students with additional skills and tools to best propel an NGO’s developments forward, ambitious second-year RSM students will work together with unique globally operating NGOs in achieving their mission. Our partner NGOs tackle societal challenges all over the world ranging from water scarcity in Zimbabwe to fighting poverty in South Africa.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

The NGO’s specific needs dictate the mix of specialized/ skilled students per team. For instance, an NGO that seeks to optimize its marketing initiatives could be staffed with one Behavioral Expert (to expand social media reach), one Business Developer (to seek new partners), and one Analytical Decision Maker (to measure the positive impact on the association). These selected consulting teams of RSM students connect and cooperate with NGOs and help define the NGO’s specific challenges based upon its current needs, as well as design and implement an effective solution.

Project examples

In teams of 5 students will support an NGO in achieving its mission by defining the NGO’s specific challenges based upon its current needs, as well as design and implement an effective solution.

Teams will develop and execute marketing strategies, conduct feasibility studies of projects, optimize current operations and much more. Likewise, I DO developed a sophisticated academic structure that includes valuable workshops which together form a coherent course framework to maximise a team’s success at supporting the NGOs’ missions. Our guiding principle is co-creation and collaboration in order to create the biggest positive impact possible. This means, feedback and opinions from the NGO will be heard and discussed in various planned as well as spontaneous feedback and brainstorming sessions.

Each team is led and guided by a coach. This coach is experienced in working on impact-driven projects and received sophisticated leadership and personal development training. Furthermore, I DO is organised and led by a mixed team of students, RSM staff and professors. This structure ensures that student feedback and experiences are immediately translated into the continuous development of the course in order to enable real and significant impact.

The I DO Project encompasses two interdependent phases: (1) the preparation and (2) the action phase. The preparation phase extends from October until the end of December and incorporates the theoretical preparation and skills training for students to kickstart the action period. The action phase will cover the implementation of the solution plan after approval of the NGO. This part of the course is a 5-month section during which participants will work for the NGO.
