Learner goals and capabilities

Roanoke College invites employers to collaborate with students enrolled in "The Art of the Interview," a course designed to develop essential interviewing skills and qualitative research techniques. Students will gain hands-on experience in crafting questions, conducting interviews, analyzing qualitative data, summarizing findings, and providing professional reports—all while applying ethical practices. By partnering with learners, employers can leverage fresh perspectives and creative insights that will benefit their projects.

Employers are expected to maintain regular communication with students, provide guidance, and ensure that all relevant information is shared throughout the project. Additionally, employers should be virtually present during the final presentation to provide constructive feedback on the learners' work.

Project Examples

This Experience is ideal for projects that require insightful interviews and qualitative analysis. The following examples illustrate the types of projects that would be a strong fit:

  1. Community Needs Assessment: Conduct interviews with local residents to gather insights about community challenges and opportunities.
  2. Oral History Project: Document personal stories of local residents during significant historical events to preserve community narratives.
  3. Customer Insight Focus Group: Moderate discussions with customers to explore feedback on new product concepts or services.
  4. Cultural Sensitivity Training: Interview community leaders to inform training materials that enhance organizational cultural competence.

What Not to Propose: Projects that require technical skills outside the scope of the course (e.g., advanced data analysis), projects lacking a clear focus on interviewing, or those that do not align with the ethical considerations of qualitative research are not suitable. Additionally, a list of willing interview subjects is preferred.
