Sport Management Major students gain skills in business fundamentals and specific sport management disciplines in a learning environment that balances textbook theory with real-world business application. Students are exposed to the legal, regulatory, marketing and operational aspects of sport venue, program and team management.

Students (individuals or teams) can help with:

  • Planning: Define your organization’s long term and short term strategic plans and organizational goals.
  • Organization and Administration: Establish structure to your organization, its employees / players / fans and create a productive environment.
  • Leading: Motivate and train employees as well as assign responsibilities and delegate authority.
  • Problem Solving: Maintain an ethical work environment, developing approaches to problem solving.
  • Controlling: Evaluate employee, process, team and / or player performance and the progress to the strategic plan, including finances, and make corrections if necessary.

Project Examples

Davenport students will be able to perform managerial responsibilities across industry sectors with confidence. When designing an internship, sophomore status Sport Management interns can have many tasks or roles, and junior status students need elevated responsibilities.

Examples of projects

Promoting a course of action and managing in areas such as:

      • Games / Facilities / Events / Fundraisers / Camps / Fields
      • Improvements / Changes
      • Materials / Merchandise Inventory / Logistics
      • Accounts / Sales / Territory
      • Travel
      • Operations, including Entrepreneurial Business Start Up (other than one’s own): Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, LLC, Corporation, Non-Profit…

Drafting/Implementing:

  • Organizational Policies In Line with Relevant Governing Bodies per sport and competition level
      • Recruiting Practices in Line with Best Practices for Students / Athletes in specific program
      • Training / Work Instructions / Manuals
      • Safety and Compliance Procedures
      • Social Media Monitoring and Content Production in Line with Brand

Managing People and Games by:

  • Promoting effective communication using proper sport industry language and terminology; example: Meeting and Visit management, developing communication plans
      • Resource Planning Example: Identifying and allocating people, identifying business tools, creating and maintaining the project plan
      • Communicating and Re-calibrating Performance Expectations

Collection and Analysis of Data by:

  • Identifying and Validating Trends
      • Completing Research / Feasibility Studies
      • Perform qualitative and quantitative assessment, then Formulating Recommendations and presenting to Leadership

Managing Process by:

  • Helping to Decide on the Control Points Needed or review what is required
      • Establishing Tools and Tracking, Database Management
      • Goal Setting: Making Performance Known, Visible and / or Accessible

Managing Monetary Assets and Costs:

  • Budgets / Forecasts and Variance

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions. Be available for a virtual mid-semester check-in about student progress.

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor/Davenport University representative to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

End evaluation. We would love to have honest feedback about the student's performance and professionalism. We will email you a form to complete.

Mentorship is required. Employers need to be trained/experienced in sport and event management and/or marketing, and willing to provide a safe and supportive learning environment.
