Project scope

What is the main goal for this project?

In West Edmonton, many youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness face barriers accessing safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate housing. Our organization wants to better understand the gaps in existing supports and identify possible intervention points. Learners will address this challenge by engaging in community-based research and mapping available services.

The expected outcome is a clearer picture of what exists, what’s missing, and how we can strengthen supports for youth. This project aligns with SDG #1 (No Poverty), SDG #11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG #10 (Reduced Inequalities).

What tasks will learners need to complete to achieve the project goal?

Tasks and Activities Learners Will Engage In:

  • Conduct a scan of youth housing services and transitional programs in West Edmonton
  • Review literature and social work research on youth homelessness prevention
  • Identify barriers faced by racialized, LGBTQ2S+, and Indigenous youth in housing access
  • Use tools such as service mapping or journey mapping to visualize gaps
  • Draft materials that support advocacy or public education on youth housing needs

Deliverables:

  • Community resource/service map (digital or visual format)
  • Summary report with key findings and recommendations (6–8 pages)
  • Visual aid or infographic communicating the core issues (1–2 pages)
  • Slide deck and 10-minute presentation for community partner
