Overview
Details

With the aging population, the demands on health-care workers in long-term care facilities is ever increasing. In this project, students will work in groups of four to six to learn about the working conditions of a participating long-term care facility in their community. Students will conduct research on the realities of working in this type of facility. They will collect quantitative and qualitative data in an effort to develop recommendations for improvement.

Deliverables

Students will write a 16- to 18-page report that includes four sections:

  1. A detailed background, with a literature review, on issues identified in their project
  2. An outline of the project, including information on what students did and how
  3. An analysis and synthesis of the data collected
  4. A summary with recommendations

Students may find these resources helpful:

Project Examples

This project may include, but is not limited to:

  • Creating an online survey for health-care workers to collect quantitative data on their demographics, training, years of service, and regular hours worked in the long-term care facility
  • Conducting interviews and focus groups with health-care workers to determine the biggest challenges they regularly face in relation to working conditions
  • Conducting a literature review on identified issues
  • Assessing any mental health and wellness issues raised by health-care workers to determine whether these issues may have an impact on the quality of client care
  • Developing recommendations for policies to improve working conditions
