Overview
Details

Public health units rely on different groups of health-care workers to collectively support the health-care needs of individuals in their communities. In this project, students will connect with a participating local public health unit and conduct an informational survey to collect data on the different types of health-care workers that work in the unit. They will also identify challenges and develop recommendations for improvement.

Deliverables

Students will write a 16- to 18-page report that includes four sections:

  1. A detailed background, with a literature review, on issues identified in their project
  2. An outline of the project, including information on what students did and how
  3. An analysis and synthesis of the data collected
  4. A summary with recommendations

Students may find these resources helpful:

Project Examples

This project may include, but is not limited to:

  • Creating an online survey to collect quantitative data on the demographics, training, and roles and responsibilities of the different health-care workers in the local public health unit
  • Creating a matrix or searchable online tool of the types of health-care workers that work in public health units, including training requirements, where training is offered, alternative or additional certification, and continuing education
  • Conducting interviews and focus groups with health-care workers in the public health unit to determine the biggest challenges they regularly face
  • Developing recommendations to address identified challenges
  • Collaborating with the public health unit and community groups to develop strategies to enhance communication and services
