Learner skills
prompt engineering large language modeling strategic thinking artificial intelligence consulting project management business communicationThe AI4VA: UVA AI Readiness Career Academy is designed to create dual impact: participating organizations gain practical, actionable guidance on adopting AI to create business values and students graduate with stronger, demonstrable AI skills.
Unlock AI Potential for Your Small Business with Student Consultants
Through 4-week, team-based projects, UVA students will apply foundational AI processes to real organizational challenges. This hands-on consultancy is designed for businesses and not-for-profit organizations eager to explore how AI can enhance decision-making, streamline operations, improve customer experiences, and drive growth. Employers benefit from fresh perspectives, structured analysis, and tailored recommendations that support responsible and effective AI adoption.
Each project functions as a mini-consulting engagement, blending AI processes with business problem-solving to help organizations identify use cases, map workflows, test solutions, and develop implementation strategies.
About the Learners
Learners participating in this program are motivated UVA students who bring foundational knowledge in strategic thinking and applied problem-solving.
Students are organized into teams of 5, with each team supported by an assigned Project Manager to ensure progress, communication, and deliverable quality throughout the experience.

Projects you can submit
Projects should focus on exploring how AI can create measurable value for your organization through a consultative approach, focusing on strategic evaluation and tool benchmarking, rather than technical software development or AI model engineering.
Please see the five project streams for this program below. While these streams provide the framework for each engagement, the specific project examples are illustrative and will be tailored to address your organization's unique goals. Given the 4-week timeline, each engagement should focus on one clearly scoped problem within a stream rather than covering multiple angles.
1. AI in Organizational Strategy & Impact
- Analyze a specific workflow or decision-making process to identify where AI could add value.
- Benchmark 2 to 3 AI tools against a defined organizational need (e.g., resource allocation, market analysis) and recommend a path forward.
2. AI in Data & Analytics
- Evaluate AI tools to clean, categorize, or tag a defined dataset (e.g., donor records, sales logs) and recommend an approach to reduce manual effort.
- Consult on a Generative AI approach to summarize a specific data set or build a lightweight dashboard concept for decision support.
3. AI in Operations & Process Automation
- Map one to two time-consuming manual workflows and recommend specific AI tools to reduce bottlenecks.
- Evaluate automation tools (e.g., AI-powered scheduling or document processing) for a single high-impact use case.
4. AI in Marketing & E-Commerce
- Evaluate tools to enhance marketing personalization for a specific channel or campaign.
- Audit one manual creative workflow (e.g., ad variations, product descriptions) and recommend Generative AI tools to scale it.
5. AI Literacy & Enablement
- Design a starter set of AI usage guidelines for a specific team or function.
- Support a pilot group with prompt engineering basics and responsible AI practices.
