AZNext internships (AZNext: Workforce Training Accelerator Partnership for Next Generation Jobs) align classroom training with on-the-job experience in tech fields such as IT, analytics, programming, and more.

This model helps interns contribute to employers much faster than a typical internship.

We strongly recommend companies assign interns a mentor that would be available for students to contact for questions about their work experience to support this goal.

AZNext Internships will require a minimum of 440 hours of work experience to complete. Industry partners have two options to participate:

  • Option 1: Provide the full 440 hours of project-based work to the student.
  • Option 2: Be willing to accommodate a portion of the required 440 hours, supporting the student through the first, middle, or final portion of their required work hours
Deliverables

Business partners are responsible for hiring their selected interns or selecting current employees to be interns. They will also provide projects and on-the-job training, identify an experienced mentor as a resource, and pay the intern at a rate equal to the local minimum wage or above. Employers have the option to scale wages as skills are developed. ASU will request confirmation of the intern’s work hours for tracking quarterly or a frequency that best fits the employer’s schedule.

Throughout the program, AZNext will have quarterly check-ins with the employer and the interns to ensure the program is on track and ask the employer for feedback to determine if any additional support would benefit the program’s success.

Once the program has been completed, the employer can determine if they can offer the intern further employment. This is not a requirement for participation. AZNext will manage all existing procedures and documents for the intern regardless of their continued employment.

Project Examples

Industry partners will work with the sponsor (ASU’s AZNext program) to confirm the skills and knowledge that interns must learn to be successful in their target occupation. These include the number of interns needed for the program, the length of the program, whether it is a full or part-time position, and what baseline qualifications would be needed for successful candidates.

AZNext can build out a new internship program or modify an existing internship to fit your project requirements based on your particular needs. Once a program has been designed to meet your specific requirements, ASU will draft an agreement document.

Once the agreement is in place, AZNext can assist with all administrative duties, including but not limited to posting and managing the job posting, monitoring and reviewing the applicants, providing a screened list of applicants for the company to interview, continual monitoring of the intern throughout their work, and tracking any required reporting.

Required questions to apply

Companies must answer the following custom questions in order to apply to this experience:

A representative of the company will be available to answer questions from students in a timely manner for the duration of the project.

A representative of the company will be available for a pre-selection discussion with the administrator of the internship program to review the project scope.

AZNext will have quarterly check-ins with both the employer and the interns throughout the program to make sure that the program is on track. AZNext will ask the employer for feedback to determine if any additional support would benefit the program’s success.

Once the program has been completed, the employer can determine if they can offer the intern further employment. This is not a requirement of participating in this program. AZNext will manage all existing procedures and documents for the intern regardless of their continued employment.

We strongly recommend companies assign interns a mentor that would be available for students to contact for questions about their work experience to support this goal.

We require students to be paid according to federal minimum wage standards ($7.25/hour or higher depending on your state's prevailing hour rate). What rate will you be able to offer students per hour?
