Bring on learners from Ohio Northern University to be your learner-consultants, in a project-based experience. Learners will work on one main project over the experience of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.
Learners in this program/experience are introduced to the study of how languages work, examining sounds, forms of words, sentence structure, meaning and usage, as well as providing a comprehensive view of human language ability. Learners will also explore syntax, meaning, context, language changes, sociolinguistics, and acquisition.
The majority of learners are TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages) minors and are planning on utilizing tools learned in this class either in the classroom or with L2 speakers.
Deliverables are negotiable, and will seek to align the needs of the learners and the organization.
Some final project deliverables might include:
- A 10-15 minute presentation on key findings and recommendations
- A detailed report including their research, analysis, insights and recommendations

Project Examples
Learners will individually work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.
For this research project, learners will begin with resources, peer review journals, and types of studies. Each project should include the following:
- A literature review of the topic chosen.
- A study or product
- A qualitative or quantitative analysis of the study or product
- A discussion of the significance of their findings
- A presentation of their project
Some examples of projects may include but are not limited to:
- Creating a story in IPA:
Determining how it would be performed as an audiobook. Examine the Phonology and determine why certain choices were made and what would cause the reader problems.
- Miscue analysis
Miscue analysis is a means to use a running record for diagnosis to identify students' specific difficulties. Not only is the running record a way to identify reading rate and reading accuracy, but it also is a way to assess reading behaviors and identify reading behaviors that need support. A miscue analysis is a great way to get some authentic information about a student's reading skills, and a means to identify specific weaknesses
- Sociolinguistics in a commercial:
Choose a commercial and transcribe it. Examine what is happening both linguistically using IPA variations as well as sociolinguistically. What pragmatics, syntax choice, dialectal variations, etc. are being used.
- Create a language learning game:
Choose a language learning level/objective. How would you make it fun for the language learner? What information needs to be there to fully master the objectives? What scaffolded information and background knowledge should already be there? What choices did you make and why?
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Be available for a quick phone/virtual call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the experience.
Provide a dedicated contact person who is available for weekly/bi-weekly drop-ins to address learners’ questions as well as periodic messages over the duration of the project.
Provide an opportunity for learners to present their work and receive feedback.
Provide relevant information and/or data as needed for the project.
How is your project relevant to the experience?
