Looking to either buy, sell or hold shares in a stock-market listed company? Bring on students from the University of Stirling to be your student-consultants, in a project-based experience. Students will be completing a case study dissertation from June to September, and will be connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.

Students are required to complete a case study dissertation that is aimed at investors who wish to make decisions on whether to buy, sell or hold shares in a company that the student is investigating. The quantitative methods used to reach the decision should be consistent with the main arguments in the student's dissertation.

Project Examples

The dissertation will include multiple components, all of which will be submitted to the delivery partner at the end of the partnership. Overall, the dissertation includes the student's investment recommendation (regarding whether to buy, hold or sell the shares).

  • The student will also provide an analysis of the impacts that the wider economy has on the company in question (including supply chain considerations, geographic and political impacts, inflation, exchange rates, etc).
  • Following the overview of the economic environment, the student will provide an analysis of the outlook and structure of sector(s) that the company is operating in (including the kind of industry, whether it's competitive or monopolistic, any relevant price/production policies, etc). A PESTEL analysis will typically be included.
  • The dissertation will also include a discussion and literature review of an accounting or finance topic that is relevant to the company that they are working with. For example, these topics could be: mergers and acquisitions, hedging, risk management, creative accounting, etc.
  • Next, the student will provide an analysis of the company, within the sector(s) in which it operates. Students will assess the quality of the management and the effectiveness of the corporate strategy. Students may also include SWOT and Porter's Five Forces analysis.
  • Finally, the student will include a valuation of company shares. This can include, but is not limited to price-earnings multiple analysis, discounted cash flow analysis, discounted abnormal earnings and the dividend discount model. Students may also provide detailed earnings and cash flow forecasts.
